Statue of Zeus , Olympia

The Statue of God Zeus, built in ancient Greece, is one of the Ancient Seven  Wonders of the World.  Many people accept the existence of this idol, while many people call the existence of the idol only as Mythology.  Hindu Mythology and Greek Mythology have been in conflict with each other.  But one thing is common in both these mythologies, such as in Hinduism or mythology, the king of heaven has been called Indra or Devendra.  On the other hand, in Greek mythology, the king of heaven or the king of the gods is called Zeus.

Greek Mythology

This statue of Zeus, created at Olympia, was included in the ancient seven wonders.  The construction of this statue was started by the famous Greek sculptor Phidias in 432 BC.  After 12 years of hard work, the grand construction work of this idol was completed.

Zeus the Supreme God

Like Hindu mythology, Greek mythology has also been world famous, the people of Greece considered Zeus to be the king of ancient gods.  That is, the Supreme God, therefore a grand temple was built in the city of Olympia for the honor of Zeus.  This temple was built in a small forest geographically situated between two rivers. In this statue, Zeus was shown sitting on a big and grand throne.  The height of this idol was 42 feet and most of the idol was made of wood, which was covered with ivory and other metals.

The specialty of this idol was that its face and legs were made of ivory.  The tunicle , sandals and hair in the idol were made of gold.  The gold in the tunicle  was a mixture of bronze and other precious stones.

On the right hand side of the statue of Zeus was a small statue of the goddess of Greece.  On his left hand was a scepter made from a rare metal.A pool was constructed in front of the feet of the idol.  The cistern was filled with olive oil.  This was done so that the parts of the statue made of ivory would not crack in the humid climate of Olympia. The construction of this pool was wonderfully done.  The light of the sun fell on the pool and the light reflected and fell on the idol, which further increased the beauty and grandeur of this idol.

Many centuries passed,The wheel of time continued with the pace and there came a time when the Roman Empire established the suzerainty of Olympia in 392 AD.  The people of the Roman Empire were fierce in religious practice.  The Romans were fierce fanatics of Christianity and the Romans stopped all religious ceremonies, games and customs taking place in Olympia.  What happened to this idol after 392, no one has any clear information about it.

It is believed that in AD 426, King theodosius had ordered the destruction of all the temples, then perhaps this idol would have been destroyed. With modern techniques, archaeologists discovered the encirclement and pool of this temple, but no clue of the statue of Zeus was found.  It is not clear whether this statue was torn down by the Roman Empire or burnt to ashes in the fire of constantinople.
