Dholavira is a Harappan period archaeological site situated in Gulf of Kutch .Dholavira is one of the major archaeological sites in India.  It is 5000 years old located in Bhachau  taluka in Kutch district of Gujarat state.Kutch is well known as largest salt pool in the world .According to archaeologists, Dholavira is a 5000 year old city, It is also ancient from the Great Pyramids of Egypt.  This city was inhabited for one and a half thousand years.

When the ancient Roman culture emerged in the world, there were 7 cities in India in which the largest city was considered to be Dholavira


Dholavira was discovered in 1968 by archaeologist Jagat Pati Joshi. The site's excavation between 1990 and 2005 under the supervision of archaeologist Ravindra Singh Bisht uncovered the ancient city, which was a commercial and manufacturing hub for about 1,500 years before its decline and eventual ruin in 1500 BC.

The Creation of The City .

The town design of Dholavira was distinctive and attractive.The city of Dholavira was divided into three parts.  In the first part the chief ruling officers lived.  The second part was inhabited by smaller officers than the first  and the third part was inhabited by ordinary people such as labourers, farmers and merchants.

Dholavira is very  near to the Arabian Sea.  That is why during the winter days the sea water level used to come above the land and during the summer days the same water used to go back to in to the sea due to which The whole land had turned white from the sourness of the sea.  That is why today that part of Kutch is known by the Safed Rann ( white desert)Of Kutch.

Dholavira

The specialty of Dholavira was that They used to store rain water during the rainy season and then make the same water potable and meet the water needs of the city.The dirty water was used for cleaning purposes and industries were also given water according to their need.in dholavira there were 16 to 17 big tanks  were made to store the rain water.

Today's engineers are astonished after seeing and thinking about how this city would be built at that time.The people of Dholavira had manufactured everything they needed for life.Toilets and bathroom facilities were also available in the houses of Dholavira City , This is proved by its Archaeological remains.

The houses of Dholavira City were built at perpendicular angel .Which shows that They also knew about the principles of geometry.

Rangpur ( another harrapan period site ) where archaeologist found the remains of market but In the city of Dholavira, as many as 10,000 people could celebrate the festivals  and enjoy the drama or they could  playing sports together that kind of  Such a large stadium was built in dholavira.

Industries

Metal smelting furnaces have been found in the city of Dholavira, from which it is help us   known that these people used to work in the arms making industry.the people of dholavira used to make ornaments of gold and shells.Due to which this city must have been a major center of trade and commerce.


Script.

A sign board has been found near the Dholavira city gate.Ten different pictures are seen on  that board, which shows that their script was pictogram like hieroglyph. Till date no one has read this pictogram script.
